I think it's a decent method to meet people once you are older, divorced, single parent, etc. with fewer ways to meet people and when you feel too old for the bar scene.
In my opinion, college students are in an environment where they have access to more single people their own age, most of whom are focused on meeting a significant other, than any other demographic group and probably benefit more from meeting people in more conventional ways.
