This is something that I think many Americans (well, 48% ) have feared for a while. Every great empire eventually falls (Russian, British, Spanish, Roman) and I worry that we may be heading for this.
The differences between the United States as a world power, and those empires you mentioned outweighs any similarities. You could draw parallels between the failures of any great empires and civilizations. however, i see nothing that would indicate that we, as a nation, are pointed toward a catastrophic collapse in government because President Bush was re-elected.

Our social, governmental, and economic structures, as a whole, are unlike anything seen in the recorded history of the world. And still we have had the hindsight to learn from their failures (and ours), and the foresight to at least try to affect change in the Middle East. The British, Soviet/Russian, Persian, Ottoman, Spanish, Roman, Mayan, Incan, Egyptian are ALL fallen empires, but rabble rabble rabble....[cleans glasses]...blah blah blah...[cross legs and lean in]...dar dar dar...[puffs on old pipe]....chuckle chuckle period.
