I don't find what the student did offensive to me as a white person. A stupid costume yes, offensive no. Why don't I find it offensive? Well, there's no reason for it to BE offensive to me, no historical connection that makes it smack of racism.

As for the whole "slavery was a long time ago" and the seemingly "get over it" attitude in some posts....Senruset makes a key point - slavery is responsible in a large part for building the United States. When your country is built on that, I don't think it's something you can expect everyone will be all happy and forget about a hundred years later. I don't think it's something you SHOULD forget about and get over. I don't recall white folks being marginalized in US history like African Americans, Natives and other ethnic groups have been. So for white folks to tell African Americans to "get over it" shows how things haven't really changed much in a hundred years. We (white folk) are still in a more powerful position in society than those who are non-white, and to deny it is ignorant about the society we live in.

Yes, slavery existed elsewhere and still exists in the world. But we aren't talking about the world here, we are talking about the USA and its history and you can't compare one country and its slave history with anothers, they just won't be the same experiences.
