Louisiana
Senate - CBS News projected winner: Republican Rep. David Vitter
Louisiana is the only state that holds its primary election on the same day as the general election, Nov. 2. Democratic Sen. John Breaux is retiring this year and the Republicans were hoping to pick up a seat here. The open-seat contest settled into a four-way race between Republican Rep. Vitter and three Democrats: Rep. Chris John, state Treasurer John Kennedy, and state Rep. Arthur Morrell. Vitter moved his family to Alexandria in the central part of the state for much of August in an effort to build his name identification in the region. Still, he was in an uphill battle against history. First, Louisiana had never elected a Republican to the Senate. Second, Louisianans seldom elect Republicans statewide, and third, Louisiana voters tend to be suspicious of candidates from the New Orleans metro area, which is home to Vitter, Kennedy, and Morrell.
