Wow, who told you that?

A "shrink" is someone who's educated and trained to be able to identify patterns. Patterns of behavior, thinking, etc. Which is why they can help *so much* with certain kinds of depression, eating disorders, etc. Often (say, with depression) you get so off-track with how you're thinking and reacting to the world around you that you "forget" you didn't used to be miserable all the time. A therapist/counselor/whatever can help you identify ways to change that.

Of course if you have a chemical imbalance in the brain, this will only be so effective.






sidenote: I saw an interview with Tony Robbins once and he said something that I thought was really great: exercise. He maintained that it changes your whole outlook, makes you more aggressive (in a good way!) and can have a huge effect on how you run your life, basically.
