I hear that...before I started climbing up the corporate ladder to be a cashier, I was a bagger at a different store. You get these snotty women who come through with a big load of items, including a pint of strawberries or blueberries. Then, they get up real close to you and say slowly (as if you're from another planet and don't understand English), "Be sure you put my strawberries on top so they don't get smashed."
Gee, thanks for the tip, lady...you know, I was planning on putting them at the very bottom of the bag and then throwing a gallon of milk on top of them, but I'm glad you told me the proper way to do it. Now that I think about it, I should have smashed them anyway. That would have been funny.
Not only was this annoying to put up with, it was insulting. I mean honestly, to some customers, grocery baggers are a lower form of life than cockroaches. But there was nothing we could do about their attitude, so we just had to endure the abuse. I would have paid money for one chance to look a customer in the eye and say, "I'm not stupid, you know."
