There is a pretty long thread about Birth Control methods in the "Dating and Relationships" forum.
Regarding insurance, I know NY State has to cover all oral contraceptives, regardless of the reason. That might just be for private insurance, though. I have an Aetna policy, and I've never had a problem. If you're a student, you should be able to go through a pharmacy that can give you a discount.
