While basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, 26, is relieved that the prosecutors dropped the rape case against him Sept. 2, he is said to be less certain about his future with wife, Vanessa, 22.

"There's a big rift in the marriage," an insider close to Kobe told a source, adding that he has been standoffish toward his wife. "I think she wonders if he plans to dump her. If he doesn't show more of a commitment, I expect she'll try to hike up her alimony payments by spending more and buying up half the clothes and jewelry in Beverly Hills. That's what her friends are advising her to do."

Though Kobe appreciates how Vanessa stood by his side throughout the ordeal, and thinks she is a great mother, Georgia Rottenberg, a Bryant family friend, thinks Kobe needs time to sort out his feelings about their marriage.

"He cares about her but not like he did when they met," says Rottenberg. "He feels liberated, and I think now he needs time to find himself." I don't think Vanessa understands why she can't help him with his soul-searching, says Rottenberg, adding, "She probably thinks he's just making excuses to find somebody else

On one hand I fell sorry for Kobe, but then I don't. Maybe he does love her, but then he may not and does not want to lose his money. Well, who knows.
