Max Cleland supported President Bush's tax cuts and the Iraq War, and tried to be a moderate Democrat. What he got in return were ads saying that because he didn't vote against one version of the resolution to go to war on Iraq, he was against the war, soft on national security and best friends with Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein in the wake of September 11th. I would call all of those things pretty slanderous. It doesn't pay to side with the Administration when you're in the minority. President Bush will take your help and then turn his back on you. It happens over and over again.
