All I can give you is a educated guess.
I don't think he hates Democrats or he would have switch parties. I think Zell is thinking of a politcal future. A state governement that was usually Democrats made a change in 2002. Zell goes were the politcal wind blows. He probably thinks it will get him a cabinet job if someone resigns or he can run for President in 2008 and have support from both parties. If he didn't run on a Democrat ticket he might get a vice pres offer from the GOP in 2008 just like Kerry might have tried with McCain.
