I'm kind of a hard nosed pragmatist, with a an ounce of social compassion motivated by a keen sense of self preservation:
If it isn't broken don't fix it, but constantly improve the method to improve the bottom line.
Don't let people in the world be hungry: hungry people engage in violence, or get sick and spread their disease globally. We could get sick . . .
Make sure people are able to pursue their dreams of success on a level playing field: Frustrated people result to ilegal or violent acts to achieve what they believe is their due. We could get hurt . . .
Make sure the government is not in the business of putting its own people to death: Do we truly want to trust other mortals we know to be weak and venal to investigate, prosecute and pass the extreme judgement on people? We could be the people dying next from circumstantial evidence or some change in the laws later.
Oh well, I could go on and on.
