A brother in Phi Mu Alpha cannot voluntarily relinquish his membership in the Fraternity. Per our General Regulations:
Membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia shall be for life and may not be terminated by the member through his resignation. However, as stated in the National Constitution, a member may be suspended or expelled for due cause by the chapter of his affiliation or by the Commission on Standards.
In the case of suspension, restoration to full membership can either be automatic (a member is automatically suspended for failure to pay dues, and is automatically reinstated upon payment of all dues) or can be accomplished by the body -- chapter or Commission on Standards -- that imposed the suspension.
In the case of expulsion, whether by the chapter of affiliation or by the Commission on Standards, the decision of expulsion can be appealed to the National Executive Committee. If the expulsion is upheld by the NEC, it is, as I understand it, permanent with no possibility of reinstatement.
Of course, it would be possible for a member -- at least a collegiate member -- to indirectly "quit" the Fraternity. Failure to pay dues would, as noted, lead to suspension and, if it went on long enough, could lead to expulsion. But only collegiate members and members of local alumni associations are required to pay dues; alumni-at-large are encouraged to pay annual dues but are not required to do so in order to remain in good standing.
Hope I got all of that right.
