Depending on what kind company you work for, or what position you're filling, an engineer either designs or maintains processes, or discrete parts of a process.
I worked as a process engineering intern this summer, and I had a blast. Basically, I had the opportunity to troubleshoot a fermentation process. Most of the work I did involved ensuring a tighter control on the pH of a batch process. The one project I did completely on my own involved a batch-recipe change.
