Long Beach State Greeks...
Casi, I have been involved in the student government (ASI) since freshman year, and am VERY VERY involved on our campus...
1) The school is GREEK TOLERANT... Your statement about it not being greek friendly is not ridiculous, but it is a bit overblown...
President Maxson is one of the BIGGEST supporters of Greek Life on campus... He ALWAYS makes it a point to remind everyone that he is a Greek himself, and that "if all you do is go to class, you're not getting a full education"... That's his signature greek life and student extracurricular activity promotion line...
* I have seen and heard of schools that are VERY VERY anti-greek, and the differences between their schools and ours are great...
These schools I speak of don't even allow greek housing, refuse to accept new greek organizations, and do everything in their power to destroy the greek system...
That is NOT the case at Long Beach State... There is a difference...
2) We have TRIED to fight for a greek row, but in our current situation with other priorities, and the LACK OF OPEN LAND in Long Beach (we are an old coastal community, so there's no more room to establish a greek row unless we get lucky and buy some land from someone), it's just not an option at this time...
President Maxson has wanted one, and past A.S.I. presidential candidates have expressed their intentions to try for a greek row, but the situation does not allow...
We still need more on-campus housing, more parking, etc... That comes first...
That doesn't mean our campus is not greek friendly - it just means we don't have the capability to establish one at the moment due to other priorities...
3) Reiterating one of my points above, we have no more LAND...
SDSU recently established a greek row because they are in a VERY DRY and open valley area...
We are on the coast, where everything is smashed up against the ocean... There's no open land to build on in an old established city like Long Beach... Unless we BUY land from someone...
4) We may not be popular with the satirists that write in the Long Beach Grunion (which makes a mockery out of EVERYTHING on campus anyway - because it's a strictly satirical publication), but that doesn't matter... There are always going to be anti-greeks, but that doesn't mean the campus is anti-greek...
The Daily 49er writes very neutral articles on greek life...
And people in general find the greek system intriguing, whether or not they admit it...
5) We are in fact spread out throughout, and that makes it more difficult for our school to deal with the city...
If we were all together, things would be easier, but we're all in different neighborhoods where the neighbors BITCH all the time about our social functions... In result, they complain to the city and the school, and that makes things complicated...
A big reason why the big fraternities on campus (including mine) have had social probation is because of problems with neighbors...
