I think there's a HUGE difference between spanking a toddler on the rear designed for spanking, and whooping on a nine year old. You should be able to reason with the nine year old, but that just doesn't work with the toddlers!
As for consenting adults, to each his/her own. I do agree that it should NEVER involve spousal abuse of any form, however!
