Actually in a survey done at a medical school (it's been awhile since I wrote that paper) it found that men use more words per day than women. However, men use their words at work and school whereas women wait until the day unwinds and talk at home and with friends out and about. It also found that men interrupt people more often than women and are more likely to to use speculation rather than facts. But that is another topic!
