The movie rating system has been put in place for a reason. Ideally it is to let people know about the films possible offensive content and for parents to determine something is appropriate for a child. Let's review.

G General audiences.

PG-13, not for audiences 13 and under.

R not for audiences 17 and under.

The rating system was put in place for a reason. If the film isn't appropriate for a 8 yr. old then that includes babies and toddlers too. I doubt that the babies brought to The Last Samurai were crying because they were debating in Siskel and Ebert style on Tom Cruises acting ability.

As for your right to go out as parents, sometimes you have to sit on the sidelines. It's the price you pay for raising your kids. Get a babysitter or rent the DVD.

PM_MamaOO is right. My brother and sister-in-law do the same thing as your do.
