Take your example of a young person dying in Iraq. Okay, let's expand and look at what they were doing, why they were there, etc. Let's not just read that 6 more soldiers died today.
My beef is with how the news is presented -- like Laci or whoever this was are the only ones that this sort of thing happens to.

The thing with the media is they only print what sells. They're only going to wite about if it has some interesting twist, like the husband running around a hotel room naked, or lying about getting into medical school.
If it doesn't have some kind of twist/weird event, then it's not interesting and it's just another case of spousal abuse gone too far, and might only get a little blurb in the back of the paper. It's about what sells.
