were you looking at white boxers by any chance? they are predisposed to being deaf. genetic trait along with being white. well it used to be anyways.
it does take a lot more effort and like another gc'er said, visual commands. again, the attention thing can be an issue, especially when they are puppies.
you might want to consider a dog that is a lil bit older, like maybe ten months or so. they are still a puppy, but you don't usually have to deal with a lot of the puppy issues like chewing, housebreaking, etc.
