Basically because in 1926 when Ole Miss won @ Miss. St. the Ole Miss fans decided they needed to take down the goalposts. A fight broke out injuring several people. They decided they needed a token for winning the game that would keep the fans calm. So, the "Golden Egg", which is a gold-plated football (egg shaped), was decided on. Was first played for on Thanksgiving Day, 1927.
