I'm not sure that indicates he spit at the official, but rather at the ground. The supervisor who backed the ump up was on a different field at the time of the incident and was called over.
Clemens, according to eyewitnesses, and the supervisor of officials, was respectful and left the field without an argument -- giving out autographs, including to the kid involved in the disputed play with his son. The other boy's dad used the word "respectful." He also said his son admitted he missed the tag on Clemens' son.
As I said, I certainly wasn't there, but this sounds like something that got a little out of hand. It might even be possible that the young ump might have been grandstanding a bit.
You know how those people in Colorado can be.

If the above is true, I find it ridiculous that this story even made the news.
