Sorry to hear it!
I've only ever gotten warnings <knock on wood>, but my husband has gotten a couple of tickets. My favorite was the cop who said "I clocked you at 73, but I'm feeling generous, so I'm only giving you a ticket for doing 70." IT'S THE SAME FINE!!!

And this was in an old clunker that could do 65... tops... on a good day... if you were going downhill.
Many US states have a point system. Speeding results in 2-4 points depending on how fast you were going. Too many points and it's bye-bye license. The points stay there for a few years, but you can usually take a safe-driver course from an auto school to get points taken off sooner. The good news is that most states don't communicate points to other states, so if you get an out-of-state ticket you don't get points. (Exception: I think NY and NJ inform each other about points.)
