When dealing with alumnae, if one of them tells you not to stand, or tells you to call her by her first name, then that supercedes any hard & fast rule.

My point was that, as long as the alumna is made to feel comfortable, all's well with the world! So many times, I've visited the (blank) chapter, climbed the stairs if the elevator's broken, and no one has offered me a seat, a drink, or even acknowledged my existance! That does NOT make an alum feel like volunteering her time very often!
