hey man, I was the exact same way before I pledged. I grew up around greeks my whole life, so I constantly saw the good and bad of them. I often heard some bad mouth another org. but mostly in a playful manner. I also saw them take more responsibility for the community and younger society(teenagers mainly). Since I have crossed I have a deeper perspective on Greek life. And it is like any other part of life. meaning there will be people that did for good and people that did for bad. Some people join just to make them somebody(so i can party, so i can network, so i can find a boyfriend/girlfriend). Some join b/c they still believe in the org's values and want to be a part of that. It may look like we can be petty over plots and "pari", but one thing you have to understand is that there are plenty of doors opened for you once you cross(i.e. job oppurtunities, scholarships, popularity, and all that popularity brings) and many people know this. So sometimes a person that is not in your org. will where your letters for the fame and that can start problems that will result in greeks looking bad. Also, just like in life, some people will test you to see how tough you really are i.e. walking on your plot, breaking your strut line, etc and if you allow others to disrespect you regularly you will never have their respect. I do not agree with "actin' a fool" in the name of my frat but it comes with the territory. All I can tell you is that once you go greek, if you still decide to, is that your actions willl be magnified. Know why you are really doing it, and realize your life will change for the better and worse (depending on your viewpoint). overall I believe Greek life is still great for the black community. We have Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, and Jesse Jackson just to name a few greeks that are helping us greatly. and as for my myself, I am more motivated to be involved with the communtiy and my personal goals.
