Tell her that it's a little like Girl Guides/Girl Scouts, but for college/university aged women. That's usually what I use when I explain it to my relatives from Hong Kong.
ETA: I don't know about schools in India, but I imagine that some of them are modelled after British schools, so you can also say that it is kind of like the House System (see my thread on "British style private schools" in Chit Chat for an explanation).
