Ha. Who'd want to go to Duke anyway?
Nah, just kidding. I have a few HS friends that go there and and like it alright, but I wouldn't have been happy there. Durham is like the most unfun town in North Carolina, also. I think I could stand going there for my Ph.D. but as an undergrad it's not really happening. If that makes all of y'all feel better.
This is a big thing in North Carolina for whatever reason.
Wake Forest provides IBM (I think) laptops for all of its students freshman year, and then they get a new one junior year.
Chapel Hill requires incoming freshmen to purchase laptops (at a greatly reduced price I think).
I'm seeing it as a "jumping on the bandwagon" thing. Plus the thing is (as others have pointed out), it's coming out of your tuition. At Wake (where my best friend went) they got free laundry, laptops, and a bunch of other perks but their tuition was a lot higher than Washington and Lee's (at least at first--I haven't compared costs in a year or so). Which is interesting seeing as we're ranked higher. So who knows.
