I agree that people have the right to post in a public forum. However, the immature and insensitive posts are polluting an otherwise great website. Recently, one has to wade through garbage to find a post worth reading.
This happened before on another forum site that I go to and, for a little while, they had a public alter-checker, so that everyone who was posting under multiple names from the same IP address could be outed. Wouldn't THAT be interesting to see...
Maybe being in a little internet clique gives people a perception of power or acceptance, or maybe they are just having fun - who knows. But I would personally prefer if people kept their random "drive by" posts in the PM's instead of putting them out on the boards.

Here's the problem with drive-by posts: they are hardly limited to one person, or one group of people on the boards. And to me, before the "drive-by" posts came along, I was having trouble finding stuff to respond to on the boards. There are plenty of posts on GC that I don't like -- people TMI-ing about their sex lives, the idiots who inject drama into every single thread about race, any post that contains the word "sailing" -- but that's tough luck. GC wasn't designed for me and so I have to put up with a lot of isht on here that I don't like. John is the only one who has any real jurisdiction over what stays up on these boards, and since he hasn't talked to any of us about the content, I don't see any reason to stop.
You can complain to us about how mean we are, which I think is relevant to the whole board (although hardly valid, as I pointed out before). But you can't complain about pointless posts, since they are ALL OVER the board.
And also, James? Hi pot, meet kettle.
I can't believe I got sucked back into the tornado of unfun that is this thread.

I'm going back to my business meeting.
