Corbin, you're right about what knickerbockers are...When the Dutch first settled in New York, their style of dress became very popular, as well as the actual word "knickerbocker". When it came down to naming New York's b-ball team...the final choice literally came from drawing the name from a hat. Knickerbocker was the named that was drawn the most, sooo Knickerbocker it was/is!
The word knickerbocker was so popular here that, before the basketball team got the name, there was a baseball team from Manhattan called the Knickerbocker 9. Go figure!
Now, as for the Mets...I have no idea. Metropolitan sounds like a pretty good guess though...or maybe it's short for Metropolis. I'm a Yankee fanatic, so I really don't care too much for Met history.
I'll have to get back to you all on Madison Square Garden. That's a dam good question!
