Heidi, I'm glad that you decided to take another road. It's unfortunate that your friends have suffered, but you're right--you've made the right decision.

I became interested in joining a sorority after realizing that I hadn't really done anything with myself in college. Sure, I was a full time student that had a part time job, but I really wanted to become involved on campus. I first pledged a local, Asian interest sorority, and I discovered that they weren't for me. They hazed their pledges (peeons was the name the used for us). Needless to say, I depledged. After that situation I decided that going Greek wasn't for me.

And then a friend of mine (an AGD sister) approached me about an Open House for Alpha Gamma Delta. My friend was Recruitment chair that semester. How convenient! I liked what I saw...and my friend ended up becoming my sister-mother!

I'm glad that I didn't let that bad experience ruin my outlook on Greek life! It's been 3 1/2 years since my HS friends and I graduated and by this time we've all moved on into different interests. They're not really supportive of my decision to be in a sorority, but hey--that's their opinion. We're always going to stay friends, but for now we're happy doing our own things!
