I've actually found that starting price doesn't make much difference when selling on ebay. If it's worth $100, it will get to $100 whether you start it a $1 or $99.

In fact, I found that a lower starting bid actually encourages the member-on-member bidding frenzy that drives up the price of the badge. You hook a bunch of people at the lower price and they battle each other to the end.

By contrast, when you start the bidding very high, people tend to wait until the last minute to put in the first bid. You'll probably still end the auction at a good market price, but you won't get the super-inflated price that a bid war brings.
