GMail is Google's entry into free Web-based e-mail. The big selling point is that is allows for 1 gigabyte of storage space, compared to less than 4 MB for the competition. Considering that many e-mails include attachments containing photos and the like, it's easy to see why you need the space.
If I remember correctly, the only way - currently - to open up a GMail account is to get an invitation from someone who already has a GMail account. The response has been overwhelming, and some crafty individuals have taken to selling some of their invites on eBay, which has slowed down additional invites. (Greedy bastards... they'll sell used toilet paper on eBay if they can get away with it!
