No one in my family is Greek and I'm from out-of-state, but I still found my home. Recs aren't big at my school, but they may be at yours. Recs will be important at Alabama. That being said, I don't think you are SOL if you don't have any, but it will give you an advantage, and may be crucial for some groups. The fact that you are from out of state will not be such a big deal -UA is a huge school and there are people there from everywhere.
There is a thread on GC of women who are willing to either write recs for you or assist you in finding someone in your area to write one for you. Start asking around in your hometown as well, teachers, friend's moms, other women you know. You might be surprised how many you find who were in sororities and you didnt know it.
