I'm with Tom on this one.

Possibility a) The post was (deliberate) flamebait.

Possibility b) Someone's had limited exposure to greek life, it's as much a newsflash to everyone as the news "Water's wet!" that there are negative portrayals of greek life out there. So, it's not surprising someone comes across them and wonders how much truth they carry. Or, they may've had negative experiences and wonder how widespread such experiences are.

A bunch of people gave greencup the benefit of the doubt (i.e. that it just might be b) ) e.g. SiKeS UNLESS and UNTIL the originating poster proves otherwise. Which is cool.

Assuming it isn't a), then a question of "It seems crazy, what's the point of going greek?" is NOT the most unlikely response in the world from someone to some of the negativity, urban legends and general crap out there about fraternities and sororities.

Having fun is good but turning someone off of Greek life (originating poster or people who read this thread otherwise)... is a risk. Never know who's opinions could be swayed by stuff.

I remember one thread by someone in Ireland I think, who was off to the States the next year or something, asked something like "What's the point, isn't it all some big cult w/hazing etc?"/. S/he got some helpful replies etc and changed her mind and decided s/he wanted to rush when s/he went to college in the States.

All right enough rambling, I don't know the originating poster one way or the other but I'm with Tom and a buncha others on not assuming troll when I dunno either way.

eta: I started writing before Damasa's post, too. Who also made good points. I know all this was ramble-y but I'm thinking about the weekend.
