You are, indeed, correct! The "Stars and Bars" were actually designed by Nicola Marschall. He also designed the Confederate uniform and is known as the Artist of the Deep South. I had to do a little tour on Heritage Day about him, so I know more about him than I probably should.
My friend, who teaches United States History in a high school, has students that don't understand what exactly the "Stars and Bars" are and has them learn all of the flags of the Confederacy. Of course, she also makes her kids learn about the Union, too
