Should I go for the promotion?

Here's the deal. I just started my full time job 4 months ago, and my boss, who was just promoted like 6 months ago, is leaving in July. I'm currently split between two departments-Member Services, which is where Kelly is leaving, and Communications. I originally took the job because of the communications aspect and I don't want to give it up.

Should I show interest in the position? Ideally, I want them to come begging to me to take the job, but I know that is unlikely. In this case I would wheel and deal for the best of both jobs. I don't want to give up the communication aspect, as it is the fun part, but I would love the promotion and the raise. Not to mention I would probably have to train the new person they would hire, who would probably be younger than me and I would have a hard time with that, plus I would know how to do everything they would do with no additional compensation.

I would be devistated if they (1) did not offer me the position on their own or (2) if I applied and did not get it. If I applied and they decided not to meet my needs, I don't think I would be too upset because that would have been my choice, as I wouldn't want to give up the fun parts of the job.

Any advice, anyone? Maybe I just needed to sound off. I don't know but I would like to hear your feedback!

Thanks bunches!
