I had a squirrel in my apartment this past fall.. We got a brand of traps called "Have a Heart." These traps don't hurt the animal. ALl we did was put a saltine with peanutbutter in the trap and the squirrel fell for it!
But co-sign with the above about the humane traps and calling animal control. Those are the safest bets.
