This is very common. TV executives program to the demographic that advertisers want to appeal to (18-35, male) If you take a careful look at costumes and casting you'll see very few women over 40 unless they are in a supporting (mother) role. I'm disappointed but not surprised. While you'd hope that ER, which was, at one point, a fairly good depiction of the environment of a teaching hospital, would show the hierarchy that does require age and experience. The show has gone downhill FAST and is now, both with the medical storylines and with the way they treat characters.
