Adrienne, that's a normal mommy reaction, don't worry - my parents wanted to buy me pepper spray when I moved down to my apartment, which is two blocks from where my mom lived when she was in college.
I'm moving to DC in a year (yikes!) and I'm sure they'll bring it up again then too.
It's just a mom thing, not a scared of the city thing.
