Look, I don't want to turn this into a beer-nerd thread (actually, i sorta do, but i try not to bring work home with me), but . . .
The truth is, for decades Pabst was considered a Premium beer here in the states, at least when compared to the other mass-produced lagers of the time. It was never the top-selling brew, but was often considered the marquee of the extensive midwest brewing heritage.
Obviously, we now have craft breweries with major-market distribution to outclass anything that comes in 'case form' . . . but god damn it, PBR is by far the best cheap beer. And it's not even close.
