I've had Dish Network for 3 years-- only time it goes out was during a heavy snow (and how often does THAT happen in Texas???) and during bad thunderstorms (usually about 2 minutes before the power goes out). That's more reliable than cable was back home... when it went out, it was usually out for at least a day not the few minutes that the satellite takes. The Dish PVR is great. I don't record to the VCR anymore. If I really want to keep a copy of a show, I can edit out the commercials while I'm taping it. There are a few channels that are different... Direct TV has more sports packages (that's why you'll see it in the sports bars). I have the "America's Everything" package. It's cheaper than cable and I love having both east and west feeds for HBO/ Showtime. Basically, I have Dish because the satellite dish was already installed when I bought the house. If I was looking now, I'd do a side-by-side comparison of both services. Direct TV has Oxygen and Trio (and Dish doesn't) but Dish has GAS, which is something you'd want.... you never can predict what channels they'll add. I started with 150 channels plus premiums... now it's 180 plus premiums.
