Don't feel bad about crating him! It's actually much safer/healthier for them and they really don't mind. It's comforting for them as dogs are den animals. As with any training, it will take some getting used to, but you're honestly not hurting him when you crate him. Make sure he sees it as a safe place and never use it as a punishment. Lure him in with treats and praise him constantly. Treats and positive reinforcement also work well with housetraining.
