I'm type 1 and I will always have to take insulin for ever and ever and ever, no matter how great my diet is. Simply because I do not produce any of my own. Your father must still prduce some of his own insulin which is why he can control his diabetes by diet.
I would say he has type 2.

co sign... insulin dependent diabetics (type 1) don't normally get diagnosed after the age of 20 either. I was reading this yesterday. 1 in 250 people have type 1 diabetes. (Love being a statistic...

)
There are different types of diabetic treatments and I have heard of type 2 diabetics taking shots, but many just stick to a pill.
Maybe I should go try south beach...
I found out yesterday that I gained all the weight back that I had originally lost. It was weird. Like everytime I step on a scale, I am a pound heavier. I am getting a little freaked out because my blood sugars are going nuts so I called my endocronologist. Hopefully she gets back to me soon. But for now I am gonna stick to the diet my trainer at the gym gave me and give up my morning starbucks run... because during lent I lost weight. (and gave up starbucks...)
