Natalie Merchant felt that the band was holding her back. So, she went solo.
As for Depeche Mode, David Gahan released a solo album last year. It's really good. You should find it and buy it. About them breaking up, I have no idea if they did or not.
I would also like to see the Fine Young Canibal get back together.
