We are awake
At Beta-Xi we initiated 23 in the fall and 6 this spring. We grew to about 60 dues paying members as of right now. It was a tough year of alchoholic sanctions(no alcohol in the fraternity house for a calendar year) and fines for getting into two fights with two other fraternities last spring. It took our chapter as a whole to understand that we are not a drinking club. And if we kept fighting it was going to hurt our reputation and kill moral. We finally realized that our fraternity was heading in the wrong direction. We held our heads up high with pride and rushed and initiated one of our recent big pledge classes this past fall. It was tough not being able to throw parties like the other fraternity houses on the row. It would have been easy to throw parties and get into more trouble. Then came spring with the newly elected E-board's leadership and hard work. Our chapter as a whole has done a 180 degree turn around. Our internal problems have dimminished within the house. We had awsome sociols, bad-ass date parties and ended the spring with our biggest RCB ever, with over 50 active and alumni members going. We are expecting 30 plus guys to live in the house next fall, and almost the entire E-board living at the house over the summer to prepare us for next fall. Overall it was risk management, internal problems, and no leadership that almost killed us. But with the new E-board came a new attitude and pride I had never seen before in our guys. The few guys that caused problems were dealt with swiftly. When a chapter dies it most likely comes from lack of leadership, poor attitudes and no risk management. We learned the hard way, and it almost took us down. It comes down to how well each member of a house functions in and outside of the fraternity. Because one guy can bring the whole house down. Unfortunatly our neighboors at San Diego State recently lost their charter because of the above reasons. They were a power house and now are gone. It is sad to see this happen to a group of good guys, but it makes our chapter realize how easily we can lose all that we worked for. We are shooting to initiate 30 guys next fall and if when we succeed in doing so, the sky is the limit for our chapter.
