That's not true in my experience. My car only takes premium. Tried putting regular in it once and it knocked and knocked. From that day forward, it got the good stuff. (Oh, my wallet...

My husband's car, on the other hand, only takes regular. He tried putting premium in it once and its performance actually suffered. The mechanic told us it is optimized for 87 octane. So that's what it gets.
I just paid $1.939/gal for my last fill-up of premium. Nothing compared to folks in some other areas, but still... ouch.
