Have to add this:
I also think that there are people who you NEED to know at certain points of your life and can have an intense connection with (friend or loved one, etc.) BUT may be a temporary connection for you, just depending on where you are in your life at the time. For example, a really great friend from high school who you connected honestly on many levels but who you feel absolutely no connection with anymore, or maybe even despise now. I think these people help you learn about yourself.
(And, to add, I am Christian...I know that some Christians have a problem with this whole "connection" thing, but I do not feel that it contradicts my beliefs
