I can see some validity to the ladder theory. But, in the *above* case I was talking about, how would it explain it if I had him on the "good" ladder, he *supposedly* had me on the ladder, he didn't make a move, I was too chicken to make a move, and we didn't actually mention the "friends" word until after he had mentioned he saw me as a sister (and I hadn't said anything either way about what I felt for him)???

ETA: Now the guy in question is happily engaged to another woman who is absolutely perfect for him, and I couldn't be happier, because she *fits* him better than I ever could.
