I promise I won't take this personally as someone who is a reporter.
But descriptions are often encouraged in writing as a way to "humanize" the subject, as it were. When Mothra Stewart was on trial, I saw plenty of references to her big-bucks Hermes Birkin handbag.
On the other hand, I also see your point about gators.
