Letter from the President

Dear Academy students,
I am proud to announce that the Spring 2004 semester marks an important time in the history of the Academy of Art College. This semester, the Academy has officially changed its name and it has appointed a new Chairman. The Academy of Art College will now be Academy of Art University, to reflect the school's exciting growth in recent years. We are proud that the Academy has expanded into a university with a student population of over 7,000, and the best curriculum offerings and resources found at any art and design institution.

I am also pleased to introduce the Academy's new Chairman, Dr. Nancy Houston, who was recently appointed by the Board of Directors. Dr. Houston served as the Chairman of the Information Systems Department at Grove City College. She was a professor in the graduate programs of the University of Maryland, European Division, and Boston University. Dr. Houston served on the Council of the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) for seven years and was Chairman of ACICS for two years. She has an impressive background in education and technology that will benefit the Academy for years to come.

Dr. Nancy Houston is assuming the role of Chairman of the Academy of Art University from Dr. Richard A. Stephens, who will be entering his retirement. Dr. Stephens has led the Academy since 1951, first as President and then as Chairman. The Academy owes its current stature to the energy, wisdom and foresight of his leadership.

In addition to these historical changes at the Academy, we have also experienced much exciting news around campus, including the presentation of an Honorary Doctorate to Hollywood special effects legend Stan Winston. Never has there been such momentum before the Academy's biggest events of the year. We are gearing up for the best and largest Spring Show, Fashion Show and Commencement in the school's history. I encourage all of you to become involved with the Spring Show by submitting your work. The commentary and critique you will receive is invaluable, even if your work is not selected this year.

I wish you the best for the remainder of your Spring 2004 classes!

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Elisa Stephens, President
