At Wash U our fee for rush was $49... and this included housing in the dorms a week (formal rush is the week before spring semester, and reslife charges $20 a day for every day spent in the dorms before they officially reopen), a recruitment t-shirt, dinner every night, booklets of info, etc. I guess it just limits it to the people who are serious about rushing. If anything, making people come back a week early from winter break is a much bigger deterrent than the rush fee.
